I've been looking for something good to eat for breakfast. My parents used to alternate eggs/sausage with oatmeal. Sort of like a QOD carb diet.
Breakfast cereals? They almost ALL have lots of sugar, except for Cheerios and Shredded Wheat. Even the Kashi line usually has at least 8g/sugar per serving.
If you look at Quaker Oats, it has an ingredient list as long as your arm. Why is all of that stuff in there? So after my trip last year to Dublin, I was please to find McCann's steel-cut whole grain oats. Ingredients? 100% Irish whole grain oats! That's it! Nothing else.
One problem is, it takes 30 min to cook. After burning a few batches, I've been experimenting with low boil for 5 min, turn off the stove and work for 20 min, reheat to boil for 5-10 min, etc.
Then I eat it with brown rice syrup, Splenda and cinnamon, and lactose-reduced 1 or 2% milk. Usually 1/3 cup, so about 200 calories without the milk.
But I can eat this for breakfast and truly not feel hungry until about 3 PM, for my second and only other meal.
A diet food? Not really. One disadvantage of oats are that it is an acid-generating grain, if you believe in that sort of thing, but the theory of acid-load vs. bone density has been recently challenged. Plus I don't know about acrylamide content in "toasted" cereals, but it's probably good to limit the amount of toasted, fried, or otherwise cooked at high-temperature food.
So try it, you'll like it!
